This course gives an introduction to the ecology of a range of different protected species and the legislation around them. We look at the survey techniques, legal responsibilities and practical considerations for a number of UK protected species. We cover the major survey techniques for the most commonly encountered UK protected species. Species include badgers, bats, dormice, otters, reptiles, great crested newts and water voles.
Course Description:
This course comprises 4 videos:
1. Wildlife legislation and Protected Species – in this video you will learn about protected species in general. We cover legislation, and focus on the ecology and surveying of badgers, great crested newts and water voles. Playing time: 1hr 6 mins.
2. Surveying for Protected Species – Dormice and Otters – in this video, you will learn about the ecology of dormice and otters and how to survey for them. Playing time: 1hr 17 mins
3. Surveying for Protected Species – Reptiles and Bats. In this video you will learn about the ecology of reptiles and bats, and how to survey for them. Playing time: 1hr 17 mins
4. Animal Tracks and Signs – in this video your tutor takes you through how to identify a range of droppings, feeding signs, nests, tracks and more. There is a separate picture quiz for this final video. Playing time 41 mins.
