If you want to know more about bats and perhaps start to work towards your survey licence then this comprehensive self-study course is for you! It gives you a good overview of the ecology of bats, legislation, how to survey for bats in buildings and the landscape.

It is the equivalent to our 2-day Bat Ecology and Surveying course with videos of your tutor carrying out surveys.

The course is run by Sue Searle BSc, PGDip, MCIEEM, Principal Ecologist with over 20 years’ experience as a bat worker.

This course is a package of 3 of our online courses:

  • Introduction to Bats
  • Surveying Buildings
  • Bat Activity Surveys: Emergence and Transects

You will need to do all three of these courses to get your Certificate

Introduction to Bats

There is one video in this part of the course which covers a comprehensive range of topics to do with bats and in particular UK bats. It covers ecology, legislation and more.

Allow 4-5 hours for this.

A handout of the talk is provided.

Surveying Buildings for Bats

This section of the course is about surveying buildings – the main place to find bats roosting.

It comprises 2 videos – the classroom session with all the background information and the second one takes you out on an actual survey to show you how to prepare for it and carry it out.

Allow 2 hours for this part of the course.

Bat Activity Surveys: Emergence and Transects

There are 3 videos in this part of the course which covers a comprehensive range of topics to do with undertaking bat transect and emergence surveys.

This is a great introduction to practical surveying of bats outside the roost and is a good grounding for getting experience on bat surveying and working towards your bat survey licence.

Allow 4-5 hours for this.

At the end of the course you will complete the end of course quiz and if you get over 70% you will automatically receive a Certificate.

Student
I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed it; the content was really clear, it all made sense and the videos provided the ‘in-field’ experience I was looking for in this introductory course
LF
I really enjoyed learning about bat ecology and dealing with many different scenarios
Student
It was a good mix of theoretical and practical tasks, and it was really interesting getting to handle the specimens and ID them up close.
Olivia
Sums up pretty much everything a beginner would need to know about British bats and how to survey them.
Lewis
I have had a couple of replies from local consultancies and I am due to go out on some training surveys with them and hopefully get registered as a subcontractor if all goes well. Just wanted to say – thank you so much! I would never have had the confidence to go for it without the knowledge and encouragement that you have shared, and I’m really looking forward to attending more courses this spring and summer
JB

By the end of this course you will feel you know a LOT about bats! Maybe you can start to get involved in doing surveys with your local bat group or bat consultants which is a great way to consolidate your learning!

Other online bat courses that ETUK provide include:

  • Architectural Terms for Bat Workers
  • Health and Safety for Bat Workers
