Interested in bats? Working towards your bat licence? This short introduction to surveying buildings for bats will be both relevant and interesting! If you are working towards your bat licence it is one of the elements you need to cover.

We have designed this course to give you foundation knowledge of the principles of surveying buildings for bats and includes ‘going out’ to assess a couple of buildings. It is in the form of videos hosted by a Principal Ecologist and experienced bat worker with over 20 years’ experience.

The course covers surveying buildings for bats which is both interesting and informative and forms part of your training for a bat licence.

It covers a range of useful topics including identifying bat signs, basic architectural terms, health and safety, how to carry out a survey, data recording and licensing. You will gain lots of tips and information to be able to carry out bat surveys (with a licensed bat worker).

Course format: This short course is in two parts and delivered as videos prepared by a bat worker with over 20 years’ experience.

Video 1 covers the principles behind surveying for bats in buildings – identifying bat signs, health and safety, survey aims, roost type assessment, data recording and licensing.

Video 2 you go out with an extremely experienced bat worker to explore two sites and to show you how to carry out an internal and external survey of a building, what to look for, how to assess the site and what conclusions were reached. This video also covers some basic architectural terms in order for you to be able to describe buildings. (There is another course available called Bats: Architectural Terms for Bat Workers available on our website).

At the end there will be a short quiz and if you get over 70% you will receive a Certificate.

Time commitment: Allow around 4 hours to study the materials and look up references.

Learning outcomes: By the end of the course you will have an awareness of the principles behind surveying buildings for bats. You will gain a wider knowledge on the subject that will contribute towards gaining a bat licence.

Booking for another person?

If you are purchasing a course/s on behalf of another person, please follow these steps to ensure they can access their course/s:

  2. Including the correct billing address and information for the payment method that was used.

  4. Make sure to pass on the Username and Password to the student so they can get started on learning. All their course materials will be available on their account.

 

Booking for multiple people?

If you are purchasing courses on behalf of multiple other people, follow these steps to ensure they can access their course/s:

  1. Create a student account under your own details and add the correct number of courses for all the students you are purchasing for. (Example: If three people need to take Mammal ID, add it to basket three times).
  2. Ask each student (person who you have purchased the course for) to create their own student account on our website with their own details.
  3. Once purchased, contact us directly to let us know the Names, student account Usernames and Email Addresses for each student you have bought for.
  4. We will contact each of them directly with directions on how to purchase the course free of charge once it has been paid for already.
