
Introduction to bats is a beginner-friendly course designed to give you an insight into these fascinating creatures.
Are you interested in bats and want to know more? Or are you working towards your bat licence? This self-study online course will cover the background knowledge of bat ecology, conservation, threats and legislation required to get a bat licence.
Course Description:
This course is delivered via video hosted by Sue Searle BSc PGDip MCIEEM. Sue is the head tutor at ETUK, has over 20 years of experience as a bat ecologist in the UK and has helped countless people get their bat licence.
Topics covered in this course:
- Bat taxonomy and relationships to other mammals
- Bat biology including adaptations, life strategies, senses, physiological specialisations.
- Reproduction in bats
- Bat food, feeding and echolocation
- Seasons, roost sites, hibernation, maternity colonies.
- Bat conservation – threats to bats including habitat loss, loss of roosts, pesticides and persecution
- Understanding bats and rabies
- Bats and the law – legal status and licences
At the end of the course you will take a quiz and if you get over 70% you receive a certificate.
To successfully apply for your bat licence, you will need to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and survey experience. This course is designed to give you the background knowledge of bats that you will need. You will also need to put time and effort into learning survey techniques and gaining experience.
