About:

Phase 1 habitat surveying is a system of mapping habitats as a baseline to further survey work and is the industry standard used by ecologists throughout the UK. This introductory level course will greatly enhance your understanding of Phase 1 habitat surveys and give you confidence in carrying them out. The experience gained will be relevant to both consultancy and conservation.

This course is a series of 3 videos especially prepared by our Principal Ecologist and Senior Tutor Sue Searle BSc PGDip MCIEEM who will talk you through the process as if you are there.

During the course you will:

– Gain an understanding of why, how and when Phase 1 habitat surveys are used in this Video of a classroom theory session.
– Watch a video of our tutor in the field showing you how to identify and record habitats.
– Watch a video of our tutor preparing a Phase 1 habitat map in the field and later in the office.

The Phase 1 handbook is essential if you want to carry out a Phase 1 habitat survey and we recommend that you download from the JNCC website prior to attending the course. You will only need Part 2 – Field Manual part (from page 35 onwards).

At the end there will be a short quiz and if you get over 70% you will receive a Certificate.  You can also submit a practice Phase 1 map for critique.

This is what some of our students have said about this course:

“Thoroughly enjoyed this course. I’ve completed several others from ETUK and each have been extremely informative, easy to follow and I will definitely be completing more in the future!” KC

“Despite being taught remotely I still felt like I understood the method from the ‘classroom’ session and the videos of outdoors showing different habitats and how to actually draw the map were covered very well which gave me the confidence to have a go myself. The tutor is also good at replying to any questions.“…it was very clear and helpful, especially the examples and live scenarios. I really enjoyed the course…”

“I thoroughly enjoyed the course and have to thank you for making it so accessible during the current situation we all find ourselves in. My note book is full, my colouring pencils are worn and my boots are covered with mud after a successful Phase 1 Habitat test run.”

“I am really glad that I did the course as it has made me feel more confident in the creation and application of Phase 1 habitat surveys. I am excited to get out and practice what I have learnt today.
