About:

Badgers are frequently encountered on development sites and are fully protected by law so it is important that ecologists know how to survey for them, how to recognise their field signs and have a good understanding of their ecology. All of these topics are covered in this self-study course.

Course Description:

This introductory level course will be taught online by an experienced Principal Ecologist from Ecology Training UK via videos.

Course content:

  • Rural and urban badger ecology
  • Identification of field signs
  • Surveying for badgers
  • Legislation

During the course your tutor will take you out to visit a badger sett to help you identify field signs.

Course Format:

This course is delivered on videos presented by Principal Ecologist, Sue Searle, BSc, PGDip, MCIEEM. It is the same content as our one-day Badger Ecology and Surveying course.

Video 1 covers badger ecology, field signs, sett types, survey techniques, data collection and legislation with a brief overview of Bovine TB and badgers. Playing time 1hr 18 mins.

Video 2 – Sue takes you out into the field and shows you badger signs and setts. She also shows you how to put out a trail cam and there is some footage of badgers from the trail cam taken at the sett. Playing time 18 mins.

At the end there will be a short quiz and if you get over 70% you will receive a Certificate.

What students say about the course:

“Really enjoyed the ecology and surveying part, I found it really interesting learning the different set types and latrines to determine boundary lines”

“Enjoyed it all and can now relate so much more to the badgers that live in our wood. Will be going out to practise reading the signs asap.” MK

“Straightforward, engaging and informative. Provides a great insight into badgers and how to survey them for beginners. Highly recommend this for anyone who wishes to pursue a career in badger research. It has been really fascinating.” D M-W

“Really enjoyed the badger survey course, I feel I have the confidence to carry a survey where as before I didn’t even know where to look for badger. I think the course is good for anyone with a interest and the course material was brilliant thank you.” HD

“I have just spent my evening completing your online Badger Ecology and Surveying course and would like to pass on my thanks to you and those involved for putting it together. It was thoroughly informative and its format made everything easy to digest. I particularly like the fact that the videos were hosted on YouTube as its video player is already so comfortable to use.” JG
