Otter Ecology and Surveying

5 hours
3 modules
Introductory

Understanding Otter ecology and surveying is a key skill for ecologists and conservation workers. Otters are a UK-protected species and may be encountered on any sites that are near water courses. This could include development sites or sites designated for nature conservation. As they are fully protected by law and ecologists and conservationists must have a good understanding of their ecology and know how to survey for them. We must also know how to recognise field signs, and what legislation surrounds otters in the UK.

Otter ecology and surveying is an introductory-level self-study course that comprises two pre-recorded video sessions. The first is a video ‘classroom’ session with your tutor to learn about ecology, identification, field signs and legislation. In the second session, you will experience going out on a survey with the tutor on a video. The course is taught by an experienced ecologist from Ecology Training UK Ltd and is based on our Otter Ecology and Surveying field course.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Otter biology and ecology
  • Identifying otters and their field signs
  • Legal status of otters
  • Otter conservation

What you get:

The otter ecology and surveying course comprises 2 videos – one in the classroom and one out in the field, and handouts for the classroom part. At the end there will be a short quiz and if you get over 70% you will receive a Certificate.

Here’s what our students are saying:

The experience and knowledge of the tutor really came through in the delivery of the course. I liked that the content was available on screen and that the tutor also discussed additional points in the voice over.

Great presentation! The course provided me with an in-depth overview of otters, field-sign identification, habitats, legal protection and status. The course helped to refresh and bring together my existing knowledge, whilst providing practical advice for otter surveys. It also helped me identify my skills gaps, enabling me to seek additional training before applying for licences or undertaking more complex or invasive otter surveys.
Robert Sinclair
Highly informative courses covering many aspects of ecology, with the flexibility to study at your own pace .

I really found these courses useful for refresh knowledge and CPD, as a Conservation Dog Handler and Trainer I will definitely recommend these to my student at Conservation K9 Consultancy. The easy access in your own time course suits me and my busy work life so I appreciate it. Thanks again

I really enjoyed this one, I’ve been assisting on a few otter surveys recently but unfortunately haven’t come across any signs yet, so this course has been really helpful for knowing what to look out for!
