Otters may be encountered on development sites that affect or are near to water courses. They may also be present on sites designated for nature conservation. Therefore it is important that ecologists and conservationists know how to survey for them, how to recognise their field signs and have a good understanding of their ecology.

This course is an introductory level course and will include our Online Otter Ecology and Surveying course and an in person field trip to Otterton, Devon, home of one of Britain’s only wild beaver populations. You need to complete the online part BEFORE the field course.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Otter biology and ecology
  • Identifying otters and their field signs
  • Legal status of otters
  • Otter conservation

Instructions to enrol on your online modules will be provided within your course once purchased!

During the course we will also take a trip to a local site to look for otter field signs, so be sure to bring your field clothes and equipment including wellies, wet weather clothing and binoculars. You will also need to bring a packed lunch.

“Intriguing, I had no questions unanswered and Sue was inspirational.”

“A relaxed day learning about a species with like minded people”

The course will be held at Otterton Village Hall, Otterton, Devon. The hall is a few minutes walk from the river.
