A one day on-line webinar running from 9.30am to 4pm.
This live, Zoom webinar looks at a wide range of subjects to give a comprehensive overview of the specific issues surrounding habitat management for insect pollinators.
This is far more complex than simply planting flowering plants, and needs to include allowances for different species requirements, both from the perspective of the adult insect but it could be argued, even more importantly, to include suitable habitat and food sources for insect larvae to grow within.
The webinar also considers other insects as well as pollinators within the food web, especially as many larvae are carnivorous and some flies as adults may also need protein sources whilst still pollinating plants and crops.
The webinar looks at habitats and the potential for increasing insect pollinators within these it also looks at survey methods, collection, preservation, and identification of insects. This is obviously important for understanding what is present, and monitoring changes over the following years to ensure that habitat management is achieving the original aims.
The individual subject areas that are explored in detail are as follows:
- What is a pollinator?
- Insects as pollinators
- Ecological services from insect pollinators?
- Habitat diversity
- Ecological niches within larger habitats
- Insects as food (for pollinator insects)
- Pest control by pollinating insects
- Red Data Book insect pollinators
- Known insect/plant associations
- Insect survey, collection, preservation and identification
- Specialist support
