
This online, self-study course has been designed to give you a good foundation knowledge of habitat management in the UK. This course is an ideal starting place for anyone wishing to work in conservation or reserve management. The course is suitable for anyone wishing to work as an ecological consultant, as they are regularly asked to produce management plans and give advice on enhancing sites for wildlife.
Course format: These 6 self-study modules will be available to read through in your own time. To further enhance your knowledge and learning experience there will be some directed reading at the end of each module, as well as some quiz questions so that you can test yourself. At the end, there will be a short quiz which, if you get over 70%, you will be issued with a certificate.
Time commitment: The 6 self-study modules and we advise students to allow 2-4 hours per module to complete each module and to read around the subject.
Learning outcomes: By the end of the course you will have an awareness of the importance of habitat management. You will understand the need for site surveying and data collection and have background information on preparing a management plan. You will gain an understanding of management prescriptions for grasslands and woodlands; as well as for dormice, barn owls and great crested newts. Furthermore, you will have a wider knowledge of the subject that will help equip you for jobs in the conservation and ecology sectors.
Core text: The core text for the course is Sutherland, W. J. and Hill, D. A. (1995) Managing Habitats for Conservation, Cambridge University Press and we strongly recommend that you purchase this.
