Introductory

Reptile ecology and surveying is an introductory-level course designed to give you a thorough understanding of UK reptiles, how to survey them and their ecology. We cover the identification of reptiles, their distribution in the UK, key survey methods used, how to handle reptiles and the strategies used in mitigation plans for reptiles.

This course will be particularly useful for ecological consultants, as a large portion of their summer work will be surveying and translocating reptiles. Reptile ecology and surveying is also suitable for anyone interested in finding out more about British reptiles or anyone wanting to subcontract on reptile translocation projects.

During this online course, you will:

  • Learn to identify UK reptile species, including some non-native naturalised species.
  • Learn about their ecology, distribution and the legislation relating to reptiles.
  • Learn best practices for handling of reptiles.
  • Learn how to identify reptiles from their shed skins.
  • Learn about surveying and mitigation strategies.

The course is delivered by Principal Ecologist and Head Tutor Sue Searle BSc PGDip MCIEEM. It is delivered via pre-recorded video and comprises a ‘classroom’ theory session and videos on reptile surveying and handling.

At the end there will be a short quiz and if you get over 70% you will receive a Certificate.

Playing time: 1 hour 50 mins
