Great Crested Newts and Developments

1 modules
Advanced

Great Crested Newts are a UK protected species, and although their numbers are small, they are widespread in lowland England. Whilst they breed in ponds, they spend much of their lives on land, occupying a range of habitats in rural, suburban and urban areas. Because of their varied range, there is potential to encounter Great Crested Newts on many different development sites. It is essential, therefore, that ecologists have a clear understanding of the legislation, potential risks and guidance relating to great crested newts and developments.

During this course we will look at the law surrounding great crested newts and how to come up with and implement appropriate mitigation plans. We will look at different case studies to ensure that you are confident and proficient at devising mitigation plans.

This course is delivered as a pre-recorded webinar hosted by Dr Lindsay Carrington.

Course outline:

This advanced course is primarily aimed at ecologists who work with developers on sites where great crested newts may be present. This course covers the following topics:

  • Licensing and legislation
  • Survey requirements
  • Mitigation techniques
  • Workshop (devising mitigation for a series of case studies).

The teaching is excellent. It’s clear, precise and easy to follow. The knowledge from Sue is fantastic and it’s taught in a very understandable way with no rush. It’s been really good and I feel I’ve been able to retain the information well because of the way the course has been taught.

I liked the course, it was very comprehensive. I’m surprised how much I enjoyed the online elements of the course, I thought I would do better in a face to face course but honestly being able to go at my own pace is really working for me as I can spend time on the bits I find tricky as they come up rather than making a note to look things up later… I like the YouTube videos, being able to pause or even speed up the video to match my pace works well for me. I do feel like I learnt a lot. I would 100% recommend the course to others

ETUK- has really given me a step up into the ecology sector. I feel confident and motivated to take my career development in this direction, particularly in bat work, this course has given me the foundations to achieve that. Thank you 🙂

The course was enjoyable and informative. I found it particularly helpful in how flexible the study time was. You could do one module and then leave it a day or two when you had more time. It has also helped my career prospects.
