Bat Ecology and surveying is perfect for anyone wishing to know more about bats, or anyone starting to work towards their bat licence. This is a comprehensive self-study course that will give you an overview of the ecology of bats, the legislation surrounding them and how to survey them both in buildings and in the landscape.
This course is the equivalent to our 2-day Bat Ecology and Surveying course with videos of your tutor carrying out surveys. If you would prefer a more hands-on experience check here for availability of our face-to-face courses.
The course is run by Sue Searle BSc, PGDip, MCIEEM, Principal Ecologist with over 20 years’ experience as a bat worker.

Introduction to Bats
There is one video in this part of the course. It covers a comprehensive range of topics to do with bats, particularly UK species. It covers ecology, legislation and more.
Allow 4-5 hours for this.

Surveying Buildings for Bats
This section of the course is about surveying buildings. This is where most bat roosts are found.
It comprises 2 videos – the classroom session with all the background information and the second one takes you out on an actual survey to show you how to prepare for it and carry it out.
Allow 2 hours for this part of the course.
Bat Activity Surveys: Emergence and Transects
There are 3 videos in this part of the course. They cover a comprehensive range of topics to do with undertaking bat transect and emergence surveys.
This is a great introduction to practical surveying of bats outside the roost and is a good grounding for getting experience on bat surveying and working towards your bat survey licence.
Allow 4-5 hours for this.
At the end of the course you will complete the end of course quiz and if you get over 70% you will automatically receive a Certificate.

After the course I have now gained a greater knowledge of UK bats, their habitats, roots and how to identify their presence within our surroundings. This has given me the opportunity to learn from home in a format that suits my busy lifestyle. After completion I feel I have achieved good knowledge and understanding of UK bats and it’s set me up for the next course which I’m enjoying studying.
I enjoyed the whole thing, I think with some general knowledge beforehand I now have a greater understanding of roosts, habitats and their surroundings.
I especially like that it’s on line so I can fit this around my work schedule.
