Join us in West Devon at Coombeshead Rewilding for an unforgettable experience at this amazing rewilding site owned by Derek Gow, a very well-known rewilder and species reintroduction expert and the man responsible for re-introducing beavers to the UK.
Day 1: Tour of a Rewilding Site – Experience first-hand the work in progress of rewilding a former agricultural desert: witness habitats going wild, meet the wildlife speeding up their transformation and learn about the trials and tribulations of the process. Take part in some practical conservation activities and learn how to create a Habitat and Wildlife restoration management plan.
In the evening, we will go on a Beaver Safari to see how these fantastic ecosystem engineers have transformed the landscape within their enclosure into a flourishing wetland, creating a whole range of new habitats for local wildlife – big and small.
Day 2: Species and Habitat Monitoring Techniques – A hands-on introduction to the tools and methods used by conservation professionals to monitor species and habitats. Techniques will include habitat mapping, butterfly, bird and reptile surveys, and small mammal trapping.
In the evening, we will try out bat detectors and night vision aids to study the bat activity on site and discover why bats are both an indicator of biodiversity and a vital part of a thriving ecosystem.
Day 3: Tour of a Species Recovery Centre – Visit a leading facility focused on species recovery efforts and learn about breeding, rehabilitation, and release programs that are restoring wildlife populations. You will encounter wild cats, white storks, turtle doves and water voles plus more.
The field courses are held several times a year in the summer months. Simply attend the one most convenient to you.
You will write a management plan for a rewilding site and this will involve exploring methods to find, fund, manage and monitor your site. A template will be provided.
