Undertaking a Biodiversity Net Gain (BNG) assessment will become mandatory for most developments from January 2024 and there will be an increased requirement for ecologists to accurately map and calculate areas of existing and proposed habitats. QGIS is one of the mapping tools that can help with this assessment and this 1-day online course will cover the practical aspects of using this free open-source software for mapping and area calculation of habitats within a development site.

It will cover the functionality needed to define and digitise baseline habitats from field surveys and cover some of the practical issues in habitat definition and mapping. It will also cover use of CAD data in QGIS, frequently used to provide the proposed development design and the post-development habitats. Using QGIS geospatial techniques, areas of habitat loss and retention can also be identified and calculated.

It is aimed at QGIS users who have some familiarity with using QGIS to view, query, create and digitise GIS layers and are able to design map layouts from multiple GIS layers ready for printing (Our “QGIS for Ecologists – Beginners Webinar” is an ideal course for those new to QGIS). It is expected that course delegates will have access to QGIS and be able to use this alongside the Zoom webinar.

Timings – 9.30am-4.30pm

Tutor – Jonathan Gatward
