Birds are found in all habitat types from buildings to woodland and farmland to coast. Anyone conducting ecological surveys or undertaking conservation work will therefore encounter birds on their sites.

Course Description:

This introductory level course is aimed at people with reasonable bird identification skills who want to be able to conduct specific bird surveys as part of their consultancy or conservation work. This course provides information about the different survey types that can be used, the methodology involved and how to interpret and present the results.

The course will cover:

  • Reasons for conducting bird surveys
  • Bird legislation and its implications for surveys and developments
  • Summary of survey techniques
  • Transect and point surveys
  • Breeding bird surveys
  • Single species surveys
  • How to present your results
  • Practicing transects, point and breeding bird surveys in the field.

The course will be a mix of classroom and field based, with a visit to Tice's Meadow to practice some of the survey techniques.

Location:

The course will be held at The Kiln Badshot Lea Village Hall, Badhsot Lea, Farnham. Directions and a list of local accommodation will be provided when you book.

What to bring:

You will need to bring a packed lunch. Further details about appropriate equipment and clothing will be provided in a 'what to bring' list when you book.

Timings:

The course will commence at 9:30 am and finish at around 4:30 pm.

Pricing: 

Are you a full-time student, full-time volunteer or are you unemployed? Please enter the code ETUK20 at checkout to get 20% off the price for our one or two day introductory courses. This code IS NOT VALID for advanced courses. Please note you will be asked to provide evidence of your student / volunteer / unemployed status on the day you attend the course.

Our one-day introductory courses cost £120 per person

Our two-day introductory courses cost £220 per person

We are happy to raise an invoice for you, however this service will incur a £10 charge. Please click here to complete an easy online booking form, and our finance manager shall be in touch with you shortly.

What to bring: 

You will need to bring a packed lunch for each course day, bring a drink bottle for the field visit. Drinks are available during the classroom sessions. Please also check your specific course details as you may be required to bring additional equipment.

Timings: 

Our introductory courses usually commence at 10am and finish at around 4-4.30pm, however please check your specific course details as differences in timings are stated in the course description. For example two-day courses tend to finish later on the first day.

Location:

Most of our courses are held at our Training Centre at The Granary, Westpoint, Sidmouth Road, Clyst St Mary, Exeter, Devon, EX5 1DJ. However please check your course details as differences in locations are stated in the course description.

In case you need to stay overnight nearby the course location, we will provide you with a list of local accommodation once you have gone through checkout.
