Do you want to get to grips with plant ID, but feel daunted by the seemingly endless number of species in the field guides making you unsure where to start? If so, then our 'Beginner's Botany' course has been designed especially for you!

Course Description:

This 2-day course aims to provide you with a basic knowledge of how to identify wild flowers using keys and field guides. During the course you will also become familiar with some of the most common flowering plants that you are likely to encounter in different habitats.

The course will cover the following topics:

  • Plant structure and features commonly used for ID
  • Plant families and clues to their ID
  • Using keys and field guides
  • Site visits to different habitat types: Calcareous Grassland, Riparian and a tree workshop

The tips you will learn from our experienced tutor will help you gain confidence in identifying plants yourself, at your own pace.

Location:

The Hampshire course will be based at Shawford Parish Hall, Pearson Lane, Compton, Winchester, SO21 2AA. Shawford Train Station is within 1 minute walk of the hall. Directions and a list of local accommodation will be provided when you book.

What to bring:

You will need to bring a packed lunch. Further details about appropriate equipment and clothing will be provided in a 'what to bring' list when you book.

Timings:

On the first day the course will start at 10 am and will finish at 5:00 pm. In the evening we will meet for a meal. On the second day the course will commence at 9:30 am and finish at around 4:00 pm.

Pricing: 

Are you a full-time student, full-time volunteer or are you unemployed? Please enter the code ETUK20 at checkout to get 20% off the price for our one or two day introductory courses. This code IS NOT VALID for advanced courses. Please note you will be asked to provide evidence of your student / volunteer / unemployed status on the day you attend the course.

Our one-day introductory courses cost £120 per person

Our two-day introductory courses cost £220 per person

We are happy to raise an invoice for you, however this service will incur a £10 charge. Please click here to complete an easy online booking form, and our finance manager shall be in touch with you shortly.

What to bring: 

You will need to bring a packed lunch for each course day, bring a drink bottle for the field visit. Drinks are available during the classroom sessions. Please also check your specific course details as you may be required to bring additional equipment.

Timings: 

Our introductory courses usually commence at 10am and finish at around 4-4.30pm, however please check your specific course details as differences in timings are stated in the course description. For example two-day courses tend to finish later on the first day.

Our courses are held at various locations including Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Bristol, Hampshire and Surrey. Please check your course details as locations are stated in the course description.

In case you need to stay overnight nearby the course location, we will provide you with a list of local accommodation once you have gone through checkout.
