We offer our introductory and advanced courses as a combination course with great savings!

Day 1: Dormous Ecology and Surveying

This introductory course will greatly enhance your understanding of dormouse ecology and conservation and will provide you with a useful first step towards gaining your dormouse handling licence. Once you have completed the course, your trainer will be able to sign the appropriate sections of your dormouse training log.

Course Description:

During the course you will cover:

  • Dormouse ecology & conservation
  • Survey techniques
  • Best practice in handling dormice
  • Carrying out a dormouse nest box check

Please note that the course is partly field based and you will be required to walk up to 3km and on uneven ground, so please ensure that you are capable of this before booking.

Day 2: Dormice and Development - Advanced Level

This course will be taught by an experienced ecologist from Ecology Training UK and is aimed at those who work with developers on sites with dormice, and those ecologists working under infrastructure maintenance contracts. This day will be spent in the classroom, and will cover the following topics:

  • Dormouse ecology (brief overview)
  • Dormice and the law
  • Dormouse issues in development projects
  • European Protected Species Licences
  • Mitigation techniques
  • Case studies of dormouse projects


The course will be held at The White Hart Pub, Church Stile Lane, Woodbury, Nr Exeter EX5 1HN. Directions and a list of local accommodation will be provided when you book.

What to bring:

You will need to bring a packed lunch. Further details about appropriate equipment and clothing will be provided in a 'what to bring' list when you book.


The course will commence at 10 am and finish at around 4-4.30pm on each day.

Our combined courses are individually priced, depending on which courses have been combined.

What to bring: 

You need to bring a packed lunch and if there is a field course element then bring a drink bottle too. Refreshments will be available in the classroom. Please check your specific course details as you may also be required to bring additional equipment.

Most of our courses are held at our Training Centre at The Granary, Westpoint, Sidmouth Road, Clyst St Mary, Exeter, Devon, EX5 1DJ. However please check your specific course details as differences in locations shall be stated in the course description.
