Our advanced ecology training courses are run by either our own experienced ecologists or by guest tutors who are experts on that particular topic/species.

Bats are frequently encountered during development projects due to their use of buildings and also because of their use of the wider countryside for foraging, commuting and roosting.This course is aimed at consultants who have to give bat mitigation advice to developers or those wanting to know more about mitigation as part of their training for a bat licence.

Course content:

  • Understanding when mitigation is required.
  • Mitigating for roost loss, including different roost types (e.g. maternity, hibernation etc)
  • Mitigating for loss of habitat - e.g. foraging areas or commuting routes
  • Species specific mitigation (e.g. for horseshoes, long-eareds, pipistrelles etc)
  • Case studies and discussions regarding successful and unsuccessful mitigation
  • Useful references


The course will be based at Shawford Parish Hall, Pearson Lane, Compton, Winchester, SO21 2AA. Shawford Train Station is within 1 minute walk of the hall.

Directions and a list of local accommodation will be provided when you book.


The course will commence at 10am and finish at around 4-4.30pm.

What to Bring:

Please bring a packed lunch. We would also encourage participants to bring case studies of successful and unsuccessful mitigation schemes that can be shared with the rest of the group.

Our one-day Advanced courses cost £160 per person unless otherwise stated (e.g. Bats: How to write an EPSL – £250, Bats Licence Training – Revise and Assess – £250.)

We are happy to raise an invoice for you, however this service will incur a £10 charge. Please email to request an invoice stating:

  • company name and address
  • purchase order number (if applicable)
  • course title/date
  • delegate name.

What to bring: 

You will need to bring a packed lunch, refreshments will be available. Please check your specific course details as you may also be required to bring additional equipment, this will be provided on booking.


Our Advanced courses usually commence at 10am and finish at around 4-4.30pm, however please check your specific course details as differences in timings shall be stated in the course description. For example our two day courses tend to have a longer first day.


Our courses are held at various locations including Devon, Somerset, Dorset, Hampshire, Surrey and Bristol.  Please check your specific course details as stated in the course description.
