Core Week 2018 is over. We hope all the students have had a chance to recover and let all the information settle in their minds. All the tutors thoroughly enjoyed the week getting to know the fantastic group of students we have this year! Again there is a mix of people coming from different backgrounds on the course; some straight out of university, others making that career change. What they all have in common is enthusiasm and a desire to learn as much as they can about ecology!
Core week is where our students learn the core skills they will need as their foundation for their new career. We covered Phase 1 habitat surveys, protected species surveys and preliminary ecological appraisal and report writing. We saw reptiles, bats and a dormouse nest. We had tutorials in botany, tracks and licences. Plus a few trips out for dinner!
Our first certificate student has started her placement in the Exeter office. Jess will be with us for 4 weeks. She is currently putting together a report for a visit to a site where, on Tuesday, we carried out a preliminary bat survey and ecological appraisal. Jess is creating maps to go with the report too, putting her Phase 1 skills to the test! We’ve already given her some Analook training and last night she came out on her first bat activity survey, and it’s only been 3 days! Keep an eye out for a blog from Jess in the next few weeks.
The PLUS option of the certificate course gives students the chance to have a 4 week placement in one of our busy offices. They get stuck into all the work involved in a consultancy. It’s a busy 4 weeks and a great experience.
